Suggested Practices
To help you successfully master the exam objectives presented in this chapter, complete the following tasks to configure the Managed Metadata Service.
Practice 1: Configure Open Term Sets
In Lesson 2, you created the Customers term set. Configure the Customers term set as an open term set. Modify the Contoso Customer site column on the SharePoint site (http://intranet.contoso.com/sites/SharePoint) so that it allows fill-in choices. Republish the Customer Proposal content type. Then run the Content Type Hub and Content Type Subscriber jobs, as described in the Practice for Lesson 2.
Upload a proposal to the Proposals library (http://teams.contoso.com/depts/Sales/Proposals). In the Contoso Customer column, add a new customer, Woodgrove Bank. Remember that you must click the Browse button of the managed metadata control to add a new term.
In the Term Store Management tool, refresh your view and then confirm that Woodgrove Bank now appears in the Customers term set.
Practice 2: Configure Enterprise Keywords
Add an Enterprise Keywords column to the Customer Proposal content type. Republish the content type and run the Content Type Hub and Content Type Subscriber jobs. Open the properties of a proposal in the Proposals library and confirm that the Enterprise Keywords column is available. Add the following tags to the document: SharePoint; Fabrikam. Save the document.
In the Term Store Management tool, refresh your view and then confirm that SharePoint now appears in the Keywords set. Move the term SharePoint to the Departments keyword set as a child term of the term IT.
Practice 3: Publish a Service Application
If you have sufficient system resources, create a new virtual machine and install a new instance of SQL Server and SharePoint. Create an additional farm in the Contoso domain. Create a trust relationship between the two farms. Publish the Managed Metadata Service - Enterprise service application, and connect to the service application from the new farm. Add terms to the term store of the service application. Demonstrate that you can create a site collection in the new farm and use a managed metadata column from the term store.
